CFIA Entry Requirements & Travel Advice
-
Rabies Vaccination:
All dogs and cats over 3 months of age entering Canada must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian in the U.S. No waiting period is required after vaccination, but the certificate must be current and valid on the day of arrival. -
Health Certificate:
While not always required, a veterinary health certificate is strongly recommended and sometimes requested at the border. It should confirm your pet is free from communicable diseases and fit for travel. -
Microchip Identification:
Microchipping is not mandatory for entry into Canada, but it is highly recommended for identification and reuniting purposes. ISO-compliant chips are preferred. -
Age & Breed Restrictions:
Puppies and kittens under 8 weeks old are not permitted to enter Canada. While most domestic breeds are allowed, banned or restricted breeds may face scrutiny or denial at the border. Check with your airline and local provinces for additional rules. -
Land Border Crossing:
When driving into Canada, present your pet’s rabies certificate and any additional documents at customs. Ensure pets are secured in an appropriate crate or seat harness during transit. -
Flying to Canada:
Pets flying into Canada must enter through airports that allow live animal importation such as Toronto (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), or Montreal (YUL). Contact your airline in advance for pet travel policies and crate requirements. -
Up to 5 Pets Allowed:
Canada allows up to five pets per traveler for personal (non-commercial) entry. More than five may be considered a commercial shipment and may require CFIA pre-approval.
Choosing a Travel Crate
Whether flying or driving, your pet must travel in a secure, comfortable crate that meets IATA airline standards. Learn how to choose the right crate size to ensure safety and compliance.
- Proper Fit: Your pet should stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably inside.
- Ventilation: Crates must provide airflow on at least three sides.
- Security: Use locking mechanisms and metal doors for maximum safety.
