Japan Pet Import Rules & Travel Steps
-
Microchip:
Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO 11784/11785 compliant chip before receiving any rabies vaccines. The microchip ID must match all veterinary records. -
Rabies Vaccinations (2 Required):
Dogs and cats must receive two rabies vaccinations after microchipping. The second dose must be at least 30 days after the first and both must be valid at time of travel. -
Rabies Antibody Titer Test:
A rabies titer (FAVN) test must be done at least 180 days before entry. The sample must be sent to an approved lab (e.g., Kansas State University or DOD Lab in Texas). The result must be ≥ 0.5 IU/ml. -
Advance Notification to Japan AQS:
File the Advance Notification Form with the Animal Quarantine Service at least 40 days before arrival. You will receive an approval document to present at entry. -
USDA-Endorsed Health Certificate:
Within 10 days of departure, have a USDA-accredited vet complete Japan’s Health Certificate. This document must then be endorsed by the USDA APHIS office. We offer certificate support to ensure accuracy. -
Approved Entry Airports:
Pets must enter Japan via designated Animal Quarantine Stations, such as:- Narita International Airport (NRT)
- Haneda Airport (HND)
- Kansai International Airport (KIX)
-
Quarantine Period:
If all conditions are met, quarantine is typically less than 12 hours. If incomplete, pets may be quarantined up to 180 days at the owner's expense.
Crate Guidelines for Japan Travel
Pets must travel in an IATA-compliant crate. Ensure the crate fits your pet comfortably and meets airline and quarantine standards. Use our crate measurement guide for help.
- Proper Fit: Your pet must be able to stand, turn around, and lie down naturally.
- Ventilation: Crates must have adequate airflow on at least three sides.
- Security: A secure locking door is required for entry into Japan’s quarantine system.
Pet Travel Tips for Japan
- Climate Awareness: Japan has humid summers and cold winters. Consider flying during cooler months or at night during summer to reduce heat stress.
- Direct Flights: Opt for direct flights when possible. Japan Airlines, ANA, and other carriers allow pet cargo entry at designated airports.
- Translation: Carry a translated version of your pet's health records if possible. Japan AQS officials may appreciate it during inspection.
