Requirements, Quarantine Rules & Helpful Advice

New Zealand has some of the most rigorous biosecurity rules in the world. If you’re planning to relocate your pet from the U.S. to New Zealand, proper preparation is key. Rules, Requirements & Travel Advice

  1. Microchip Requirement:
All pets must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant (ISO 11784/11785) 15-digit microchip prior to vaccinations or testing.
  2. Rabies Vaccination:
A rabies vaccination is required, even though New Zealand is rabies-free. Dogs and cats must wait at least 6 months after vaccination and testing before they can travel.
  3. RNATT Test:
A Rabies Neutralizing Antibody Titer Test (RNATT) is mandatory and must be done at an approved lab. A 180-day wait period is required from the date the lab receives the blood sample.
  4. Import Permit:
An import permit is required for pets entering New Zealand. This must be applied for through the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) website. For help, visit our pet documentation services page.
  5. Additional Dog Health Tests:
Dogs must be tested for Babesia gibsoni, Brucella canis, and Leptospirosis depending on breed and history. A veterinary health certificate is also required.
  6. Quarantine on Arrival:
Pets are required to quarantine at an MPI-approved facility for a minimum of 10 days. Pre-booking is essential as space is limited.
  7. Flight Logistics:
Pets must arrive in Auckland or Christchurch via an approved route. The crate must meet IATA standards and be sealed by a USDA-accredited veterinarian before departure.

Approved Travel Crates

Pets must travel in crates that meet international air transport standards. For New Zealand, crates should be:

  • Properly Sized: Allow your pet to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably.
  • Well Ventilated: At least three sides of the crate should provide proper airflow.
  • Securely Latched: Metal doors with secure locking mechanisms are a must.
  • Absorbent Material: Line the crate with newspaper or absorbent bedding to manage accidents.
  • Food & Water Bowls: Attach spill-proof bowls for hydration during travel.

Unsure which crate to choose? Find the correct crate size here or contact us for recommendations tailored to your pet.
